County Judge Jerry Hogan Endorses Jim Pruitt

Jerry Hogan - Rockwall County Judge-Elect

Rockwall County Judge Jerry Hogan

Finally, after all of the politics of Redistricting and what should be the new voting lines, we are into the election cycle. We were supposed to vote on March 6; now it is a week from next Tuesday, May 29, with early voting going on now.

Please go vote!!

Our Country is built upon the premise of a democracy where every person has an equal vote. We keep it that way by exercising our right to vote that so many of our citizens have fought and died for.

We have a unique opportunity this election. For the first time since Ralph Hall went to Austin years ago, we have the opportunity to elect one of our own as a State representative. Jim Pruitt, husband of our District Attorney, is running against an individual from Collin County to represent Rockwall in Austin. Jim is the right man for this job!

I could go through all of the reasons Jim Pruitt is the person we should elect, but you are already being bombarded with literature from all the candidates for the various offices. Most of them say the same two things: “I am a strong Conservative,” and “I will fight for you in Austin.” Jim Pruitt really is and really will!

I have personally voted for Jim in early voting. I hope you will too. It’s time we send someone from Rockwall to Austin to represent us.

PAC Dogs Running After Ralph – Something Has To Be Said

What follows the second paragraph is a response to Mr. Michael Smith, a Dallas blogger who represents Campaign for Primary Accountability. Mr. Smith first contacted my by way of comment on my blog site. I invited him to call me and we talked at length yesterday, May 17.

Subsequent to our telephone conversation, Michael sent me a link to a Dallas Observer blog post titled Bipartisan Super PAC Targets Rep. Ralph Hall of Rockwall in Republican Primary.

*****

Michael,

The one “take away” from our conversation puzzled me. You remarked, to the effect, there is a more conservative candidate for CD-4, but you couldn’t name the candidate. The super PAC apparently blindly attacks incumbents without regard to consequences.

If you can, please explain how a “bipartisan Super Pact” works. In context of primary elections, is the term not oxymoronic?

If one truly wants the best Republican candidate to run in the primary, one works for that cause long before the slate of candidates is printed on the ballots.

It seems the discussion omits important facts about Congressman Hall’s voting record. He voted against ObamaCare (HR 3590). He related to me a brief encounter with President Obama when he asked the president if he wanted to know why he opposed the bill. The president indicated he did not want to hear Congressman Hall’s reason, but Ralph quickly explained he voted “no” because there was no way to vote “hell no”.

The article mentions Ralph’s votes to increase the budget, but fails to point out he opposed and voted against TARP under President Bush. Mr. Linbeck’s opinion that he became “debt-conscious the moment a Democrat steps into the White House” is at best incorrect, at worst an outright lie.

It may be helpful to understand that increasing the budget in and of itself is not a “conservative sin”. Congress has necessarily raised the budget from the time of George Washington to George Bush (44) to fund wars, highway construction and the like – usual and customary federal expenditures. My wife, daughter and granddaughter were touring Boston in recent months. As their tour guide began to describe The Big Dig, I suggested she publicly remark that Texas taxes paid for it. She told me the guide acknowledged that fact. Yes, it’s messy and no one is going to change the system overnight.

With respect to “earmarks”, this is a long-time practice of members of the House to claw back funds to their respective constituents from whom the funds originated. Yes, it’s a messy business, but every congressman, past or present, has used this method, including Congressman Ron Paul for whom I voted (early) in the 2012 Republican primary election.

Regarding his party switch, you probably don’t know most of us who are Republicans here in Rockwall County also switched parties along the way, I did so after Jimmy Carter was elected. Aside from Congressman Hall, Carter was the last Democrat to get my vote for any office. Ralph and I have a mutual friend about whom is said he is “the only Rockwall Republican that came out of the womb a Republican”.

The super PAC ignorantly uses its financial clout to override the will of voters in Congressional District 4 and undoubtedly other districts as well. While, yes, the Supreme Court ruled that campaign contributions are a form of free speech, the solitary fact of wealth does not automatically infer righteousness, otherwise there ought to be a national holiday set aside to worship George Soros.

Congressman Ralph Hall lives here among us in Rockwall and not in a gated community. He does an excellent job of representing the broad and diverse interests of our Congressional district.

When we talked, I learned you live in Dallas, not in our district. If either you, Mr. Linbeck or any member of the super PAC lived here, your opinions would be highly valued. It appears to me that you and members of the super PAC are driven by blind ambition to replace all incumbents without regard to the sentiments or values of the affected people.

I have lived in CD-4 for over 26 years where I have come to personally know and love Congressman Hall. I and my fellow Rockwall County Republicans voted for him before and after his party switch. He got my vote this year as well.

It is my opinion that efforts by you and the super PAC to unseat Congressman Hall work wholly contrary to the interests of the people of my district.

Thanks for the call.

Ralph Moody Hall is more than our Congressman. He is beloved friend, respected businessman and community leader. Community leader? Yes, community leader.

He makes time for his constituents and he sows his wisdom into emerging leaders. Elected officials, whether city council members, constables, members of commissioners court or Republican Party precinct chairmen, they have all been recipients of his encouragement and wise counsel.

Ralph lives here in Rockwall. He works for us in Washington. When he’s not working there, he’s here listening to his people.

Just this week, a law-enforcement friend completed his annual bicycle ride from New Jersey to the nation’s capital. Without prior appointment, he was able to visit with Congressman Hall in his Washington office for over an hour and a half. I challenge anyone to match this experience with their respective member of Congress.

When One Bridge is Out, Take Another Route

After The Bond Election

City of Rockwall voters soundly defeated millions of dollars in public debt this month of May. All five propositions were appealing, but ‘gut instinct’ moved them to oppose all but the two more practical issues: roads and downtown improvements.

A locally well known detractors decried my “doom and gloom” warnings about economic uncertainty. If you hear the fire alarm system sound off in your school or place of business, what will you do? Will you heed the warning or sit around griping about the noise?

Full disclosure: I have no college degrees and what little I know and/or understand about finance and economics comes from personal research. Am I smarter than a fifth grader? Probably not, but my nine year-old granddaughter and I seem to be on the same page. She “gets it”.

How do I see my little role? A “Bridge Out” sign comes to mind.

A question on almost everyone’s mind – Is the American economy going to collapse? Before offering an answer to that question, let’s fortify ourselves with basic information about the American economy.

The Bad News

Yes, life will radically change for most of us in the near future. How can it not? This president, empowered by a Democrat Senate majority, has accrued more national debt than all debt accrued under the administrations of every president from George Washington to George Bush. Today, even as I write this, President Obama has added a fourth trillion-dollar deficit to our national debt. Red State blogger Dan Spencer describes his reckless spending as fanning a “prairie fire of debt” across the land of the free.

Around the world, the U.S. Dollar has been the “gold standard”, the reserve currency trusted universally by every nation on God’s green earth. If the global economy loses confidence in our unsinkable dollar, what does this portend? The Titanic’s maiden voyage serves as a good analogy.

Its builder described her as unsinkable. Perhaps the phrase “too big to fail” comes to mind. It did and we can, too.

A community leader acknowledged the plight of our national economy at the outset of the recession. He remarked, “But we are in the crow’s nest”. Although true, I am compelled to remind you that the Titanic’s crow’s nest followed it all the way to the bottom of the Atlantic.

As I approached this theme among friends recently, a very dear friend walked away, saying he wanted to stay positive. His denial of economic reality reminded me of the ostrich with head in sand – the ostrich just wants to “stay positive”.

This is ‘staying positive’?

The GOOD News

Economic collapse creates enormous, incalculable opportunities. For examples:

  • Paul Galvin created the automobile radio in the midst of the Great Depression – he solved a problem.
  • Louis M. Pearce, Sr. built up Texas Iron Works during the Great Depression by improving oil drilling technology – he solved a problem.
  • Colonel Harlan Sanders started his Kentucky Fried Chicken – he solved a problem.
  • Two young electrical engineers, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, started their business with little more than $500 – they solved problems.

It is said the Great Depression created more millionaires per capita population than any time in the history of our country.

How can I say the Great Depression brought opportunities? First of all, opportunity fell to those who were not stock market speculators, but entrepreneurs who understood the value of persistence, saving money and serving others. It was a terrific time to start businesses because prices for practically everything were low.

Harry S. Dent, Jr., author of The Great Depression Ahead accurately predicted our present recession, the “dot-com boom-bust” and other events. How is this good news? Did you not read what I wrote in the paragraph immediately above? LOW COSTS, people. Therein lays opportunity. If a Bible student, you must surely appreciate the principle of “jubilee” described in Leviticus chapter 25. God commanded Israel to forgive debts every fifty years. Twice each century all debt was forgiven. At this point, I interject an opinion: bailouts and stimulus spending prolong the inevitable. Sudden bankruptcy is the natural cure to recession and economic depression.

Jubilee positions the economy to restart at a level that assures a competitive edge in world markets. Those businesses that fail are simply those that either unwillingly or unknowingly lose out to lower-cost entrepreneurs.

The Challenge

Not all people can be entrepreneurs, but those of you who have “the calling” need to get off your “blessed assurance”, roll up your sleeves, have faith in God and GO TO WORK. Be problem solvers.

When you see “Bridge Out”, just look for a different route.

Texas House District 33 Republican Primary – Making Choices

On May 29, and during preceding early-voting days, Rockwall County voters will cast ballots for a District 33 representative. Two fine Republicans are running for this job: Jim Pruitt and Scott Turner. I love and appreciate them both, but I can choose only one.

What is District 33? The map below isn’t a “Where’s Waldo” game, believe it or not, this is the shape of our new district. With only a casual glance, you can see the outcome – gerrymandering from one side of Collin County to the other. Oh, by the way, you can see a faint outline of Rockwall County in the lower right-hand area.

New Texas House District 33 Map

If Mr. Turner wins the nomination, Collin County will have five representatives for districts 33, 66, 67, 70 and 89. How many will we have? No doubt about it, Mr. Turner has worked hard for our votes. Yet, over the years I have learned a little about human nature. It would be natural for Mr. Turner to join with his Collin County colleagues.

We enjoyed substantial representation in Austin all the years Jodie Laubenberg represented the 89th. Although Jodie lives in Collin County, we considered her one of “our own”. Initially, Jodie said she would remain neutral, but that changed the first of this month when she endorsed Scott Turner. Along with redistricting this year, allegiances followed suit.

****

Editorial correction – 17 May 2012 at 1530 hours

Jodie Laubenberg and I talked this afternoon about her endorsement of Scott Turner. Jodie denied any promise to be neutral in this race for HD-33. It was not the intent of this posting to mischaracterize Jodie or impugn her to any degree whatsoever. She and I are, and will remain, good friends forever.

My intent was and is to underscore the importance of electing Jim Pruitt to assure adequate representation of Rockwall County over the next two years.

****

Scott also lives in Collin County. His campaign has been better funded than Jim’s. If Jodie can change her allegiance so easily, why should I not expect Scott to place first his allegiance to Collin County?

All of Rockwall County lies in one Texas House District; Collin County has five. As the smallest of 254 Texas counties, we need all the representation we can get. Redistricting brought a major change for us.

Most important of all, Jim Pruitt is qualified to represent us in Austin. His extensive work with the Texas Legislature and his outstanding legal career set him apart from his competition. Jim requires no “training wheels” – he will be ready to roll the first day of the next legislative session.

I invite and encourage Rockwall County voters to cast ballots for Jim Pruitt.

Early voting is underway at the Elections Office now and Election Day is Tuesday, May 29.

Election Time – Which Judge is a Good Choice?

Justice Richter has a track record of conservatism upon which voters have returned him to the bench 8 times over his 21 years of judicial service to our area. Judge Martin Richter has been on the 5th Court of Appeals in Place 9 for the last 12 years.

The Court of Appeals for the Fifth District of Texas at Dallas has jurisdiction over appeals from both district and county courts located in Dallas, Collin, Grayson, Hunt, Rockwall and Kaufman counties. The Court hears both civil and criminal appeals. This court decides on the proper application of law, not guilt or innocence. Therefore, a conservative who does not “legislate from the bench” is of inestimable value to citizens who come before the court.

Rockwall Voters Said Yes to Common Sense, No to Extraordinary Debt

The people have resoundingly spoken by voting overwhelmingly against a $29,000,000 ball park.

One of its chief proponents (seen on the Vote Yes PAC page) says the perceived shortage of ball fields is a “tragedy”.

Just to clear the air, WordReference.com defines ‘tragedy’.

tragedy/ˈtraʤədi/
▶noun (pl. tragedies)
1 an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress.

The gentleman’s statement would make more sense with another word: ‘inconvenience’.

inconvenience /ɪnkənˈviːnɪəns/
▶noun
the state or fact of being slightly troublesome or difficult.

We actually have ball fields most of our residents know nothing about. Do you know?

Harry Myers Park has two fields.

Leon Tuttle Athletic Complex has six fields.

There are three more at Yellow Jacket Field.

AND, there are practice fields behind Hobby Lobby where I have attended my granddaughter’s softball games.

True, existing ball fields may not be as glitzy as those proposed to be funded by a $29,000,000 bond, but herein lies opportunity.

Perhaps parents of ball players will think about becoming volunteers to tidy up and improve existing ball fields. Volunteers instead of millions of dollars to hire professionals? Yes.

Runnels On the Right Side – Vote No to 36.14% Tax Increase

Our own, Johanna Runnels, appeared on NBC 5 news. She adroitly stated this simple fact: This is not a good time to dramatically increase City of Rockwall property tax.

The NBC 5 Newsman correctly says, “it will have a HUGE impact on property tax”.

Business owner Tammy Sharp claims sales tax revenue will offset the increase in property tax. Really?

If increases in sales tax offset property tax, why have we had three dramatic increases in property taxes over the last decade as major retail stores streamed into town?

Heath Councilman and candidate for mayor in Heath, Lorne Liechty recently challenged this notion. He remarked that we in Rockwall have all this retail business and our property tax continues to rise dramatically, while Heath property taxes have remained low for 15 years. “How’s that working for you?”, he asked.

The answer is obvious: it’s not working to the advantage of property owners.

On Saturday May 12, Rockwall voters will decide between adding nearly $60,000,000 more debt to the hundreds of millions we owe now and opposing all five bond propositions during a time of economic uncertainty.

I voted early and I voted AGAINST all five propositions.

Rockwall Bond Election – Vote NO to 36% Property Tax Hike

City of Rockwall Bond Election – May 12

I encourage City of Rockwall voters to vote AGAINST all five bond propositions. The Elections Office is open through May 8 for early voting. Open this link for a marked-up sample ballot.

Why I Oppose Increasing City Indebtedness

City of Rockwall voters will find five bond propositions on their ballots that, if passed, add $59,420,000.00 debt to our debt-laden city. Except for Proposition No. 3, all are not without merit. Including estimated additional operating costs, a conservative estimate of property tax increase will be 36.14%.

My opposition arises not against the merits of these propositions, but from the negative economic impact they will probably have on our taxpayers.

In bygone years, we Americans have willingly gone into debt for every worthy thing from paying for road construction to funding world wars, and we have generally been successful in paying off all that debt. We’ve been there, done that and got the Tee-Shirts to prove it.

Economic Uncertainty

America is now sailing into uncharted waters. In the last three years, we have accrued more national debt than the sum of all previous administrations from the first George (Washington) to the last George (Bush). National debt now exceeds gross domestic productivity (GDP).

Speaking before the Rockwall County Republican Men’s Club about the state of the city, a former mayor said, “But, we are in the crow’s nest”. As I remember, when the Titanic sank, it took with it the crow’s nest all the way to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. My chart below relates dollars to time to give you an idea of the enormity of our national debt.

A trillion is nearly impossible for a human to understand. Does this help you?

After the first of the year, income and capital gains taxes will dramatically rise. If ObamaCare survives the Supreme Court, it adds nineteen (19) NEW taxes.

Facts are facts: We are not in “recovery”. Unemployment and under-employment remain very high. The U.S. dollar continues its downward slide.

Energy Crisis

Without adequate energy, America comes to a screeching halt. ABC News reports 2012 as the worst year ever for gasoline prices. Motor fuel prices have doubled in only 3 ½ years.

Middle East war could drive the cost of oil and gasoline could go as high as $10/gallon. What would your life be like with $10/gallon gasoline, as it presently is in Paris? True, French fuel taxes account for much of the price, yet $10/gallon comes nevertheless a shock to Parisians: “Consumers, who have to absorb the majority of the oil price shock, are reeling”, writes Wolf Richter. You’ll be reeling, too.

Popular Support for Bonds?

No. You see a lot of signs around town, large and small. When the Vote Yes For Rockwall PAC (political action committee) put out the first wave of signs, they advocated for all 5 propositions. Their latest gimmick is a billboard advertisement on at the eastbound I-30 exit to Horizon Road – photo below.

At least our opposition worked to reduce the PAC’s goal to only ONE item.

Look closely and you’ll notice they now only want you to vote for Proposition 1 – the ball field. Why? About 80% of the PAC’s funding comes from two businesses that will directly benefit from the ball field, one located in Royse City. Royse City? Yes, Royse City. Open this link to review the PAC’s report to the City of Rockwall.
