Over the last 65 years, 1945 to 2010, Democrats have controlled the U.S. House 58 times to the Republicans’ 7 times. Across the same span of time, Democrats have controlled the U.S. Senate 55 times to the Republicans’ 10 times.
National Debt as a Function of Presidency
A subtle but easily discerned responsibility of the President is to limit spending, not initiate it. Hence: the veto power. He’s just an elected official, not a King. Therefore, he does not enjoy the “divine right of kings”. The only king in my life is Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. Sovereign debt grows without respect to presidency, until the Obama presidency, that is. Presidents should be responsible CFO’s working for government efficiency, not working to undermine state sovereignty.
So, I ask: Which governmental entity or entities control taxes and spending? Is the obvious answer the House of Representatives?
Race for Our Lives
Back in 2009, when the TEA Party movement began, I and other TEA Party organizers across America held the first Tax Day TEA Parties on April 15th to say we are Taxed Enough Already, in the spirit of the Boston TEA Party of 1773. An awareness of national debt impelled us. The election of a Democrat presidential candidate of dubious birthright, known communist associations, concealed academic records and a product of the “Chicago Political Machine” was the event that triggered the movement.
Our Rockwall County TEA Party movement is a genuine grassroots movement in that no one controls us, we have no funds and we are not a PAC or political party limited by the IRS. All our TEA Party events and public meetings are due to the spontaneous and generous contributions of Rockwall County patriots.
Now, only 95 days from Election Day, November 2, 2010, there are forces that threaten to divide us and distract us. A new mantra from the Democrats, adopted by various fringe groups, is “The Republican Party has compromised the TEA Party.”
Point of order – the TEA Party movement is not a political party, at least the Rockwall County TEA Party movement is not a political party. True, the majority of our people, in fact, vote mostly Republican. Mostly? Yes, you see my neighbors are intelligent, thoughtful and generally well-educated, fully capable of making good decisions without the direction of an oligarchy. I deeply respect the judgment of Rockwall County eligible voters – we just need more of them to vote.
While I appreciate the folks who wish to nullify undesirable and un-Constitutional federal laws, why distract the people from the task at hand? November elections are our opportunity to replace liberal Democrats and RINO’s in US and State of Texas elected offices. We do this by uniting – E Pluribus Unum – a people acting as one.
Kick Out the Bums
To me, bums are the people eligible to vote but do not. Are Republican politicians imperfect? How about you? Are you perfect? Which persons in your family are perfect? None? That’s right – no one is perfect and for this reason we have a system of checks and balances built into our Constitution. Candidates for public office are just folks like you and me: imperfect. No matter how hard you try, you will vote for imperfect candidates. However, you can make informed choices to place in office the folks who best represent your values.
Some will continue to nabber the lie “the Republican Party has compromised the TEA Party” and, to be sure, they will either refuse to vote for some Republican candidates or vote another party. (No, ‘nabber’ isn’t a valid verb, I just think this colloquialism fits.)
When Obama was on the campaign trail he promised to fundamentally change America – he hasn’t changed his mind. The evil Obama-Reid-Pelosi triad has created a possibly irreversible economic disaster. Under their watch, our national debt has grown to astronomical and unsustainable proportions.
Nancy Pelosi promised to get rid of all “earmarks”, instead she shepherds 32,000 earmark requests through the House. For comparison, there were 13,000 in 2006. She promised “transparency and openness” to the budget process, then makes back-room deals.
At this moment, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY-15), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, the tax writing people, is going to trial in the House – For what? TAX EVASION on a grand scale. Charlie faces 13 allegations of ethics violations. If Charlie were a regular citizen taxpayer, the IRS would hamstring him.
With respect to preserving liberty and thwarting tyranny, races for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Texas House of Representatives are paramount. I urge my fellow citizens to vote Republican and to hold your elected officials accountable.
My friend Gen. John M. Elkins lives with his wife in Sherman, Texas. He retired after 45 years of uniformed service to his beloved country, but he never retired from service to his country. He continues as a member of the Texhoma TEA Party Patriots and in other roles.
Through an exchange of email and photos on the subject of the Great Depression, I shared how my parents survived one of the darkest times in American history. (For the record: My father was born in 1895.)
John and his twin brother were born in Joliet, Illinois in 1930 – 80 years ago. John is one of an amazing group of Americans we call “The Greatest Generation”.
John was born in the heart of the Great Depression. Only the year before his birth, the New York index of industrial stocks plummeted in value on “Black Tuesday”, October 29, 1929, and the Great Depression officially began.
His father, John Marion Elkins, received a job offer in Dallas and the family endured a difficult and weary journey to their new Texas home, spending nights along creek beds and living in a tent. The family car failed as they travelled through Commerce, Texas. Flat broke and unable to pay for repairs, the car was sold. Commerce became home. His parents never made it to Dallas and are interred in Commerce.
His dad got a job busting rocks for building roads with the Works Project Administration (WPA). After several near-starvation years, John’s father landed a ‘good-paying’ job at the Cotton Oil Mill for 15 cents per hour.
John and his twin dropped out of school in 1946 when they enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps at the ripe old age of 16 years. The brothers both had military careers.
As Gen. Elkins writes, “The good old days were not so good!”
With 80 years of life experience behind him, John sees that our present administration and both houses of Congress take us on an undesirable journey, a painful reminder that history may repeat itself.
The New York Stock Exchange “crashed” and fortunes went to “money heaven” – life
savings, homes, farms, factories lost almost overnight. Jobs vanished and much of the American labor force found itself in soup lines or wandering across the country in search of work. Many men travelled about the country “riding the rails” as stowaways on freight trains.
Social upheaval fundamentally changed America forever. Approximately eleven million unemployed persons represented about 9% of the entire US population a little less than 123 million. At this moment in time, approximately 30 million Americans are out of work, equivalent to almost the entire population of Canada, more than the population of all of Australia.
At first, working men got into bread lines opened by churches and city halls, later men dressed in “fedoras and business suits” joined them. There was no immediate government relief, except for banks and railroads. Life was living hell for many.
I requested depression-era photographs from my friend John. He had none: his father could not afford a camera.
Can It Happen Here in Rockwall?
In fact, it is happening here in Rockwall. Unemployment and home foreclosures are all too common. Sales tax revenues are down. Middle class citizens join traditional poor at Helping Hands, Lake Pointe Church and other community relief sites for help – food and utility bills.
Will we see shanty towns, tents and families living in their automobiles. Probably not, Rockwall City government would require zoning compliance, stone-festooned tents, masonry shacks, all too costly for a bankrupt people.
Market over speculation that drives stock prices far above the natural value creates what we today call “bubbles”: Dot-com bubble, housing bubble, real estate bubble, dollar bubble, stock market bubble, and the gold bubble. Bubbles eventually pop.
Authors of “Aftershock” predict a global financial meltdown marked by collapse of the sovereign debt bubble and the dollar bubble. I tend to expect a collapse of the gold bubble, too, but who am I to question so many smart gold investors?
Actually, the US economy collapses one state at a time, one municipality at a time. In the poorest performing states, governments curtail services, lay off employees and cut expenses.
Here in Rockwall we have a costly government center (I know, the Court now calls it a courthouse because we twice voted against a government center) already millions over budget and it is only now coming out of the ground. The City of Rockwall has curtailed or reduced some services like mowing public right of way only twice annually.
A second Great Depression was inevitable, but now exacerbated by accelerated spending by the Democrat majority led by a trio of ideologically-driven leftists – Obama, Pelosi and Reid. Instead of empowering the people by keeping financial resources in the private sector, liberal Democrats are taxing us to death, robbing us of valuable capital essential to building businesses to serve a growing population.
What’s the Cure, Brother?
What do you do in your private household, when you have more month than paycheck? You probably cut back on expenses, set thermostats to energy-saving levels and make fewer trips.
Does it make sense to borrow money to pay your debts? No? Well, that is exactly what your federal government is doing: borrowing money from China to pay interest on treasury bonds sold to China. Soon, sovereign debt service will consume 100% of our GDP. Is that sustainable? Of course not.
To be sure, most Americans know we are in a difficult situation with respect to taxes and debt. They are simply unsure what the best course of action is to take. Liberal Democrats think to stimulate the economy by printing fiat money, borrowing more from China and Japan and spending more on “pork u less” projects like Harry Reid’s $8 billion passenger rail line between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Here is my solution: cut the size of government at every level from the feds down to the local school district. Cut taxes everywhere, cut government spending everywhere.
Presidents Kennedy and Bush knew this simple tactic and it worked.
But, you say, didn’t federal spending increase under Bush? Yes, it did. But, I ask, which body of the US government writes the spending bills? Obviously, it is not the president. It is the House of Representatives that has Constitutional authority to write spending bills, even though most of the Senate does not know that. They probably don’t read that archaic old Constitution.
Which party controls the House and how long have they been the majority party? Since 1947 Republicans have controlled the Senate 10 years out of 63; the House 56 years out of 63. As you can see, the Democrats, with the help of RINO’s, own the national debt.
What can we do? Let’s elect conservatives to Congress, whether Democrat or Republican. I don’t mean the Scott Brown or John McCain kind of Republican, I mean the conservatives that believe in and uphold the US Constitution, who believe marriage is a holy relationship between one man and one woman, that believe all people are either male or female, that understand that homosexuality is a behavior, not a gender, men and women who are aware of the perils of globalization in matters of international law. We need lawmakers who love America, not communists or socialists who continually apologize for being American.
November 2, Election Day, is only 100 days away. Are you registered to vote? If no, do you know how to become registered? If you are not registered, you cannot vote.
Do you know the candidates? Do you research issues via voting guides such as are provided free of charge by organizations like HeritageAlliance.com?
To which public political meetings do you attend? None? Why, don’t you care what happens to your children and grandchildren?

America’s first Tea Party in 1773 was not an act of wanton lawlessness but rather a deliberate protest against heavy-handed government and excessive taxation. Its leaders took great care to ensure that nothing but tea was thrown overboard – no other items were damaged. The “Indians” even swept the decks of the ships before they left.
Tea Parties occurred not only in Boston but also in numerous other locales. And those who participated were just ordinary citizens expressing their frustration over a government that had refused to listen to them for almost a decade. Their reasonable requests had fallen on deaf ears. Of course, the out-of-touch British claimed that the Tea Parties were lawless and violent, but such was not the case.
Interestingly, in many ways, today’s Tea Parties parallel those of long ago. But rather than protesting a tax on tea, today they are protesting dozens of taxes represented by what they call the Porkulus/Generational Theft Act of 2009 (officially called the “American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act”). For Tea Party members (and for most Americans), that act and the way it was passed epitomizes a broken system whose arrogant leaders often scorn the concerns of the citizens they purport to represent.
Tea Party folks agree with the economic logic of our Founders.
“To contract new debts is not the way to pay off old ones.” “Avoid occasions of expense…and avoid likewise the accumulation of debt not only by shunning occasions of expense but by vigorous exertions…to discharge the debts.” George Washington
“Nothing can more [affect] national credit and prosperity than a constant and systematic attention to…extinguish the present debt and to avoid as much as possible the incurring of any new debt.” Alexander Hamilton
“The maxim of buying nothing but what we have money in our pockets to pay for lays the broadest foundation for happiness.” “The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.” Thomas Jefferson
These are not radical positions – nor are the others set forth in the Tea Party platform – that Congress should: (1) provide the constitutional basis for the bills it passes; (2) reduce intrusive government regulations; (3) balance the budget; (4) limit the increase of government spending to the rate of population growth; (5) and eliminate earmarks unless approved by 2/3rds of Congress. Are these positions dangerous or extreme? Certainly not. In fact, polling shows that while Americans differ on the way they view the Tea Parties, they support these Tea Party goals by a margin of two-to-one.
Citizens are angry about the current direction of government. As John Zubly, a member of the Continental Congress in 1775, reminded the British: “My Lord, the Americans are no idiots, and they appear determined not to be slaves. Oppression will make wise men mad.” But does that anger automatically equate to violence? Of course not. It does equate to action, however; but instead of throwing tea overboard, modern Tea Parties are throwing out-of-touch politicians from both parties overboard.
The Tea Parties represent much of what is right in America – citizens reacquainting themselves with the Constitution and holding their elected officials accountable to its standards. Two centuries ago, Daniel Webster could have been talking to today’s Tea Party rallies when he said: “Hold on, my friends, to the Constitution and to the Republic for which it stands. Miracles do not cluster and what has happened once in 6,000 years may not happen again. Hold on to the Constitution!”
AUSTIN – The Texas Comptroller’s office has announced this year’s sales tax holiday will be August 20 – 22. The annual tax-free weekend allows families to buy a number of items such as clothing and footwear free of local and state sales taxes, saving shoppers about $8 for every $100 they spend.
“Families across the state are working hard to stretch their dollar and I hope this will ease the financial burden on parents preparing their children for the upcoming school year,” said state Sen. Bob Deuell (R-Greenville).
In 2009 the 81st Legislature expanded the number of items that qualify for exemption from sales taxes during the annual tax holiday. House Bill 1808 added 27 school supply items that, if priced less than $100, join clothes, footwear and some backpacks in being available tax-free.
“Most families are on tight budgets and it can be a real challenge to buy kids the clothes and supplies they need for a new school year,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said. “To help out, the Legislature has added many school supplies to the list of tax-free items during the sales tax holiday. The tax break on school supplies alone will save families nearly $9 million in state and local sales taxes this year.”
Rowlett Ranked No. 24 on Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live”
The City of Rowlett has made the top 25 of the “Best Places to Live” in the August 2010 issue of Money magazine. Ranking number 24, Rowlett is among only four Texas cities that made the top 100.

Writers from Money visited Rowlett several months ago with the news that Rowlett had been selected as a candidate for the top 100 cities in America to be listed in the “Best Places to Live” edition. While in Rowlett, they visited many sites on their own and interviewed residents, city officials, the local media and businesses. Several follow-up phone interviews and visits resulted in Rowlett’s high ranking.
“It is no surprise to me Money magazine chose Rowlett as one of the best places to live,” said Sen. Deuell. “I want to congratulate Mayor Harper and all the residents of Rowlett for gaining nationwide recognition and showing the rest of the country one of the many great communities in Senate District Two.”
