AUSTIN – The Texas Comptroller’s office has announced this year’s sales tax holiday will be August 20 – 22. The annual tax-free weekend allows families to buy a number of items such as clothing and footwear free of local and state sales taxes, saving shoppers about $8 for every $100 they spend.
“Families across the state are working hard to stretch their dollar and I hope this will ease the financial burden on parents preparing their children for the upcoming school year,” said state Sen. Bob Deuell (R-Greenville).
In 2009 the 81st Legislature expanded the number of items that qualify for exemption from sales taxes during the annual tax holiday. House Bill 1808 added 27 school supply items that, if priced less than $100, join clothes, footwear and some backpacks in being available tax-free.
“Most families are on tight budgets and it can be a real challenge to buy kids the clothes and supplies they need for a new school year,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said. “To help out, the Legislature has added many school supplies to the list of tax-free items during the sales tax holiday. The tax break on school supplies alone will save families nearly $9 million in state and local sales taxes this year.”
Among the new additions to the list of tax-exempt items are binders, calculators, notebooks, and lunch boxes. Additional information and a complete list of tax-exempt items can be found at http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html
Rowlett Ranked No. 24 on Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live”
The City of Rowlett has made the top 25 of the “Best Places to Live” in the August 2010 issue of Money magazine. Ranking number 24, Rowlett is among only four Texas cities that made the top 100.
“This is a proud day for the City of Rowlett,” said Mayor John Harper. “Now, the rest of the country knows what we already knew…that Rowlett is the best place to live! Rowlett is more than a place to buy a house. It’s a place that is rich with a sense of unmatched community pride and a promising future.”
Writers from Money visited Rowlett several months ago with the news that Rowlett had been selected as a candidate for the top 100 cities in America to be listed in the “Best Places to Live” edition. While in Rowlett, they visited many sites on their own and interviewed residents, city officials, the local media and businesses. Several follow-up phone interviews and visits resulted in Rowlett’s high ranking.
“It is no surprise to me Money magazine chose Rowlett as one of the best places to live,” said Sen. Deuell. “I want to congratulate Mayor Harper and all the residents of Rowlett for gaining nationwide recognition and showing the rest of the country one of the many great communities in Senate District Two.”
