Echoes of Afghanistan – Obama’s Syrian Strategy

13 September 2013

By 1990 all Soviet troops were out of Afghanistan after laboring through a brutal war of conquest that had Russian moms screaming for the bloodshed to end.

It was the good ole USA that supplied shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles and other armaments to the Afghan opposition forces, the Mujahideen, ostensibly led by one Osama bin Laden. It was our CIA that trained the Mujahideen in the tactics used today by that jihadist group to hijack four U.S. airliners and crash them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

It was Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, a Saudi national, that transformed Mujahideen fighters into al-Qaeda.

Subsequent to all the CIA training given al-Qaeda, 2,144 American young people died in a fruitless war to defeat Muslim terrorists. Obama now has the U.S. in retreat mode.

Where are we now? As Yogi Berra famously would say, “It’s déjà vu all over again.

While you hear about a confused Obama administration, our CIA is secretly, and not so secretly, shipping weapons to Syrian rebels and – here we go again – the CIA is actually repeating a huge mistake made in Afghanistan: they are once again training and arming Muslim Jihadists that will most certainly turn on us and Israel as before.

  1. At least arming the rebels in Afghanistan had an end goal in sight – the defeat and eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.

In hindsight arming the rebels in Afghanistan may have been a mistake but the lager goal of

crushing the Soviet Union was met. Was the tradeoff worth it? We traded the usually sensible Soviets

for radical jihadists. Historians will determine if we really made a good move.

What is the larger goal in arming the Syrian rebels.

It may look like “Echoes of Afghanistan,” however, only in appearance, not in substance.
