Ever asked yourself, “What was NASA’s original mission?” Let’s update ourselves by asking, “What is NASA’s current mission?”
NASA was created under the leadership of President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 “with a distinctly civilian (rather than military) orientation encouraging peaceful applications in space science.” [Wikipedia] This agency was commissioned to go where no man has gone before by an act of Congress, The National Aeronautics and Space Act, on July 29, 1958, signed into law by the president.
There was a political component to the mission of NASA. We called it the “Space Race” which was ignited on October 4, 1957 when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, achieving title First in Space. Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 sparked our national pride to be the leader in space exploration.
There was an even more ominous military component: national defense. The Soviets also preceded us in the successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) called R-7 Semyorka on August 21, 1957.
Keep in mind the timeline. This first ICBM event came about merely a dozen years after the end of WW2. The Russians captured their fair share of German rocket scientists, too. Over on our side, German rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun, creative genius behind the infamous V-2 rocket, became Director of the Marshall Space Flight Center where he was the chief architect of the mammoth Saturn V rocket that propelled Apollo missions into earth and lunar orbits.
Publicly, our government described NASA in scientific terms. On the military side of things, NASA’s discoveries and rocket developments put us light years ahead of our chief enemy the USSR and, under the leadership of Ronald Reagan, drove the USSR out of existence by bankrupting our enemy.
Following the fall of the Soviet Union, NASA’s mission became focused on genuine science. At this point, let’s understand the “scientific method” – what it is and how it works.
The scientific method is the best way yet discovered for winnowing the truth from lies and delusion. The simple version looks something like this:
1. Observe some aspect of the universe.
2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed.
3. Use the hypothesis to make predictions.
4. Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there are no discrepancies between theory and experiment and/or observation.
When consistency is obtained the hypothesis becomes a theory and provides a coherent set of propositions which explain a class of phenomena. A theory is then a framework within which observations are explained and predictions are made.
NASA’s mission has changed to another realm, one outside the purview of the scientific method. I would call NASA’s new mission ‘metaphysics’, a “branch of philosophy that deals with questions of knowledge and the existence of the world“.
Without doubt, I see how NASA’s mission evolved into official atheism, consistent with societal evolution within our country. We spend billions of dollars in a quest to prove Darwinism, evolution.
We can trace this mission creep back about 50 years with the establishment of SETI (search for extraterrestrial intelligence), a private institute that has greatly influenced NASA space programs. To date, SETI partners have heard nothing, nada, zip. SETI’s chief founder was Carl Sagan whose hypothesis on extraterrestrial life has produced nothing more than movie themes for the likes of “ET” and other science fiction productions.
NASA became a tool for “Muslim outreach” when Obama took office as president. Read from Fox News: Former NASA Director Says Muslim Outreach Push ‘Deeply Flawed’
So it is, I look up at our star-filled sky and call out, “NASA, call home.” Come back to the scientific method. The searches for ET’s out there have not materialized. Our universe was created, just as the Bible records. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Meanwhile, back on Earth. Carl Sagan isn’t and God is.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. John 4:23-24 NIV
