“How is this possible?”, you ask. The answer is complex and rooted in American history.
“70% of Jews self-identify as leaning to or members of the Democratic party. That compares with just 49% of the American public overall who at least lean Democratic. Only 22% of Jews consider themselves as leaning Republican, compared to 39% of the overall public. Orthodox Jews, who represent no more than 10% of the United States’ Jewish population, tend to make up the majority of Republican Jews.” [The Guardian http://ow.ly/LbURJ ]
“The reason American Jews are disproportionately liberal is complex — because there is no single reason for it. I can rattle off a dozen or so with ease, including: FDR’s outreach to Jews, Harry Truman’s recognition of Israel, the historic necessity for Jews to seek protection from central authorities, the tendency of urban populations to be liberal, antisemitism in the old (and much more liberal) GOP of the 1920s-1960s, the timing of Jewish immigration from central Europe in an era when socialism was in its heyday, and the very secular worldview of most non-orthodox Jews.” [ Jonah Goldberg, NRO http://ow.ly/LbUZ1 ]
The above historical perspective from a conservative American Jew is merely recent history. Let’s view Jewish history in its 5,775 year perspective. Semitic history (Jews and Arabs) dates from the time of Noah’s son Shem. Isaac was the progenitor of the Jews, Ishmael, his older half-brother by about 14 years, progenitor of the Arabs. From the time when mothers of both progenitors lived together, enmity, strife and persecution have endured to this day.
During WW2, Muslims collaborated with Hitler to eradicate Jews. Along comes FDR to ultimately liberate Jewish survivors from Nazi death camps. One point for FDR, a liberal Democrat. His successor, Harry Truman, was a moderate Democrat and a student of the Bible. Truman’s ethics were products of his knowledge of holy scripture. While FDR, characteristic of the liberal worldview, set his policies on the immediate, Truman was a history professor, a teacher, whose worldview was firmly rooted in ancient and modern history and the Bible, the quintessential history of Jewry. In summary, FDR waffled on establishment of a state of Israel in order to maintain alliance with Arabs to defeat Hitler, it was Truman who immediately sided with the Jews on this matter. He cited the Balfour Declaration and Woodrow Wilson’s imperative of “self determination”.
“At midnight on May 14, 1948, the Provisional Government of Israel proclaimed the new State of Israel. On that same date the United States, in the person of President Truman, recognized the provisional Jewish government as de facto authority of the new Jewish state…” [National Archives http://ow.ly/LbWmL ]
If alive today, FDR would be classified a moderate Democrat and Truman would be a right-wing Republican, TEA Party like me, if you will.
I suspect another reason a majority of American Jews vote Democrat is their opposition to American Christians. Indeed, those who claim to be followers of Christ project worldviews as broad as the Fruited Plain.
Now, in the year 2015, there are major leaders, Jewish and Evangelical Christian, uniting in common support and defense of Israel. As this year progresses, we will see ever stronger alliances.
Where are we now? This sitting Democrat president, empowered by a lock-step Democrat minority Senate aligns himself clearly with the enemies of Israel. Even this past week Barack Obama discloses secret information on Israeli nuclear capabilities. [ IRN http://ow.ly/LbXIT ]
In 2016 elections I expect to see American Jewish money and votes moving to our side of the American experience.
Let’s pray for the peace of Jerusalem so that all who love this city will prosper and be secure.
