Pope Pontificates on Immigration – Good for the Goose, Good for the Gander

Pope Francis Says USA Must Be "Compassionate" Toward Immigrants
Pope Francis Says USA Must Be “Compassionate” Toward Immigrants

To listen to Pope Francis and third-world leaders, one gets the impression our country is the least tolerant, most restrictive, least welcoming, harshest host country on the face of the earth.

How does immigration work for the Vatican?

Vatican City Immigration Wall Keeps Out Illegal Aliens
Vatican City Immigration Wall Keeps Out Illegal Aliens

Pope Francis attacks capitalism, promotes global warming-cum-climate change, berates us for our allegedly harsh immigration policies. Listening to his complaints against immigration to our shores, one can assume he opposes fences or walls on our southern border. Meanwhile, the most restrictive immigration policies are where? Yes, Vatican City.

Few women hold citizenship in Vatican City. Very few. Only a little over half of Vatican City’s population hold citizenship. Oh, Pope Francis has his token religious refugee: a mother, father and two children who are Melkite Greek Catholics who requested asylum in Italy.

As you can see in the above photo, an anti-immigrant wall around Vatican City has been standing immigration policy of that sovereign state.

Mexican President Nieto Calls for US Changes in Immigration Policies While Mexican Immigration Policies Remain Highly Restrictive

First of all, let’s clear the air around illegal immigration over our southern border. Over half of all illegal aliens coming from that direction are OTM’s – Other Than Mexicans, as DHS refers to them. The majority of present-day illegals coming toward us from the south are from Asia, including Chinese.

President Nieto actually DEPORTS more Central Americans than does President Obama.

Mexico’s policies toward U.S. citizens who wish permanent residency in Mexico.

“Foreign citizens cannot own land within 100 km of the borders or 50 km of the sea; however, foreigners can have a beneficial interest in such land through a trust (fideicomiso), where the legal ownership of the land is held by a Mexican financial institution.” Of course Mexican immigrants to the United States can own land outright.”

Curiously, I find the desire of Americans  to live in Mexico puzzling. Why?

Mexico ‘welcomes’ new U.S. immigration reform push, but continues to enforce some of the most restrictive policies in the Western Hemisphere. Today, a large sector of Mexican citizens wish to leave, but due to an improving Mexican economy, fewer trek northward.

What’s the truth about treatment of illegal aliens now residing in this country? Most now live in air-conditioned homes, some privately owned, most rentals, still others in public housing. They typically all have cell phones, jobs, and they eat well. Our country is peppered with community clinics where illegal aliens can receive top-notch medical care. This last fax I know first hand. My wife and I have volunteered over the years in such clinics, specifically here in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex at Mission East Dallas and Hope Clinic where our clients are treated with respect and high-quality medical services at very little cost to the clients. I’ve been medically treated in a Cuban government-owned free clinic. I can authoritatively say our north Texas clinics are immeasurably superior to socialistic clinics.

The so-called ‘friends’ of Job had all the answers to Job’s problems. Or, so they thought. At the end of the book, God declares them all out of order and proves the point by restoring to Job all he lost and doing it in spades.

A Biblical principle you find in Galatians 6:10 applies to our immigration and social service policies: Do good to all, but first to Americans. A nation that does not put its citizens in first place is a nation soon to go under.

Mexico is for Mexicans, first. Vatican City is for Vatican citizens, first. The United States of American must be for Americans, first.

Volkswagen Latest Casualty of Big Government – How does this affect you?

Automobile Manufacturer Cheats to Satisfy Federal Regulations

Fox News: Volkswagen CEO Quits Over Emissions Cheating Scandal

Fox Business: Volkswagen CEO Resigns Amid Emissions Scandal

Here’s what happened. Somewhere in the line of authority at Volkswagen, someone made a decision to have a software means to defeat emissions testing. Manufacturing enterprises, particularly very large ones, put a lot of pressure on employees to meet deadlines and cost projections. Ultimately, it’s all about upholding “shareholder value”. In this case, shareholder value suffered and will continue to do so for a season.

Why would Volkswagen decide to install “defeat devices” to evade clean air standards? Why would any decision maker choose to get around U.S. federal emissions standards?

Let’s start with automobile dealers and work back to the factory

2012 report to the American Automobile Dealers Association by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) describes the effects of overburdensome federal regulations on dealerships.

  • (Page-1) “…the average dealership incurred $182,754 annually in federal regulatory compliance costs for regulations pertaining to employment, business operations, vehicle financing, sales, marketing, and vehicle repair and maintenance. These regulatory costs comprised 21.7 percent of the average dealership’s 2012 before-tax net profits, or nearly $2,400 per dealership employee. Regulations pertaining to employment, accounting, and vehicle financing made up more than 63 percent of the estimated federal regulatory compliance costs.
  • (Page-1) “The $3.2 billion spent on regulatory compliance in 2012 was passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices; resulting in an estimated economic cost (total of lost sales revenues and lost consumer plus producer surplus) to light vehicle dealerships of $7.7 billion, and a 10,550 reduction in direct dealership employment. The overall impact on the U.S. economy—including direct, indirect, and expenditure-induced effects—is estimated at $10.5 billion in lost economic output and more than 75,000 fewer jobs in 2012. Every $1 increase in a dealership’s regulatory compliance costs results in $3.28 in lost output in the U.S. economy and a net loss to the U.S. Treasury of $0.44.

The CAR report of 2014 indicates ever increasing costs of compliance.

When considering both new and used vehicle sales, the mean cost per vehicle is $100. While this figure does not seem very large, the average dealership would have needed to sell 106 new and used vehicles in 2012 to recoup its regulatory compliance costs.

Impact of Federal Regulations on Automobile Manufacturers

A 2012 study commissioned by Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) reports (page 29):

“The annual number of economically significant regulations affecting the manufacturing sector has grown by approximately 80% since 2009 after maintaining a relatively stable level between 1995 and 2007, and the number of non-major regulations has been generally growing since 2004 with a clear acceleration after 2009. While the figure shows a dramatic drop in the number of non-major regulations after 1993, this is an illusion because, in September 1993, President Clinton issued Executive Order 12866, which modified the OIRA regulatory review process. In particular, EO 12866 focused OIRA’s review on major or “significant” regulations,34 (i.e., those having an annual impact of $100 million or more on the economy), a measure that greatly reduced the agency’s review of non-significant regulations.”

As government grows, liberty diminishes. As government grows, so do taxes to support it.

Nameless, faceless bureaucrats not elected by the People work tirelessly and endlessly to create ever more onerous regulations that drive Americans to find ways around those regulations.

A book authored by Harvey A. Silverglate, “Three Felonies A Day: How The Feds Target The Innocent”, we learn how each of us is probably committing as many as three federal felonies each workday.

The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes three felonies a dayhome, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day. Why? The answer lies in the very nature of modern federal criminal laws, which have exploded in number but also become impossibly broad and vague. In Three Felonies a Day, Harvey A. Silverglate reveals how federal criminal laws have become dangerously disconnected from the English common law tradition and how prosecutors can pin arguable federal crimes on any one of us, for even the most seemingly innocuous behavior

Fascism and tyranny are inversely proportional to the size of government. Isn’t it time to tell Congress to pare down the size of federal agencies and eliminate all that do not conform to constitutional enumerated powers.

out for decent Army personnel? Look to San Antonio, Texas for a harbinger of wickedness in uniform: the case of 19-year Air Force veteran Senior Master Sgt. Phillip Monk, assigned to the 37th Training Wing. Monk was “reassigned” when he refused to agree with his lesbian training squadron commander pressed him to agree that opposition to gay marriage was an act of discrimination, according to the Air Force Times.

What U.S. government authority would not only approve but endorse pederasty (sexual relations between a man and a boy)? Surely, no red-blooded American soldier should be compelled to accept such wickedness as “normal”. You would think so, but your U.S. Army, under orders from Commander-in-Chief Barack Hussein Obama will punish any soldier who protects male Afghan c children from Afghan military personnel. Lance Cpl. Gregory Buckley Jr. defended a little boy being sexually abused by an Afghan police officer on a U.S. military base and was punished for doing defending the child.

KABUL, Afghanistan — In his last phone call home, Lance Cpl. Gregory Buckley Jr. told his father what was troubling him: From his bunk in southern Afghanistan, he could hear Afghan police officers sexually abusing boys they had brought to the base.

“At night we can hear them screaming, but we’re not allowed to do anything about it,” the Marine’s father, Gregory Buckley Sr., recalled his son telling him before he was shot to death at the base in 2012. He urged his son to tell his superiors. “My son said that his officers told him to look the other way because it’s their culture.”

Texas: First In Flight

A Little Bit of Texas History – First in Aviation

Jacob Brodbeck took to the air in powered flight 40 years before the Wright brothers set off for Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Jacob Brodbeck took to the air in powered flight 40 years before the Wright brothers set off for Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

I know you now question my sanity. The Wright brothers thought they were first. That’s why the state motto of North Carolina is “First in Flight”. Well, I am of sound mind when I say, the Wrights were not first in flight.

German inventor and Texas immigrant Jacob Friedrich Brodbeck did it first. A matter of fact. A matter of recorded history. Jacob’s spring-powered aircraft flew ~100 feet and the Wright brothers reciprocating engine equipped aircraft flew only 120 feet.

It was in 1865—a whopping forty years before the infamous Wright brothers conquered gravity—that a schoolteacher by the name of Jacob Brodbeck took to the skies for the first time in human history.
It was in 1865—a whopping forty years before the infamous Wright brothers conquered gravity—that a schoolteacher by the name of Jacob Brodbeck took to the skies for the first time in human history.

For scale, let’s use a football field. Jacob landed on the 33-yard line while the Wrights landed on the 40-yard line.

“On September 20, 1865, pioneer aviator Jacob Friedrich Brodbeck may have made the first flight in an airplane–almost forty years before the Wright brothers–in a field about three miles east of Luckenbach. The Württemberg native settled in Fredericksburg in 1847. He had always had an interest in mechanics and inventing; in Germany he had attempted to build a self-winding clock, and in 1869 he designed an ice-making machine. His most cherished project, however, was his “air-ship,” with a propeller powered by coiled springs. The 1865 model featured an enclosed space for the “aeronaut,” a water propeller in case of accidental landings on water, a compass, and a barometer. The machine was said to have risen twelve feet in the air and traveled about 100 feet before the springs unwound completely and the machine crashed to the ground. Another account, however, says that the initial flight took place in San Pedro Park, San Antonio, where a bust of Brodbeck was later placed. Yet another account reports that the flight took place in 1868, not 1865. All the accounts agree, however, that Brodbeck’s airship was destroyed by its abrupt landing, although the inventor escaped serious injury. After this setback, his investors refused to put up the money for a second attempt, and he embarked on an unsuccessful fund-raising tour of the United States. Brodbeck returned to Texas and lived on a ranch near Luckenbach until his death in 1910.” – TSHA Online

Papal Paradox – Anti-Capitalist Calls for Capitalist Investment in Cuba?

Contradictions or Confusion?

On one hand, Pope Francis rails against capitalism, as reported by ReutersWe have created new idols. The worship of the golden calf of old has found a new and heartless image in the cult of money and the dictatorship of an economy which is faceless and lacking any truly humane goal.

Recorded in the same Reuters news article of May 16, 2015, he urges more control by states (national governments) over economies for he benefit of the poor. Well, if he wishes to test his socialist theories, no better opportunity exists for him at this moment. This week he tours the perfect laboratory of socialism: communist Cuba.

Theology Check

Presumably, Pope Francis’ reference to God is the same God whom I worship and serve: the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Communism sets the state as God. Communists don’t like any competition between the state and other deities.

Financial Check

Also in the above cited Reuters story, the Pope said, “While the income of a minority is increasing exponentially, that of the majority is crumbling.”

In 1959, the time of Castro’s revolution, the Cuban economy was fourth largest in the western hemisphere. Today? According to 2012 rankings, Cuba ranks  15th with GDP/capita of $10,200 USD while the United States ranks 1st with GDP/capita of $50,700 USD.

Benefits Check

Quoting the above Reuters article, Pope Francis declared, “need for financial reform along ethical lines that would produce in its turn an economic reform to benefit everyone.”

According to the CIA Factbook, Vatican City GDP for 2014 was €371,697,000,000. Sales of religious products and visits to the Vatican museum are two components of the Pope’s global income. Due to inherent secrecy of the church, we cannot know precise figures on annual income and GDP. Up until this year, the Vatican bank was one offshore repository for unreported assets. An agreement this year between our Treasury Department and the Vatican will remove that secret sanctum’s use by Americans.

As shown in the chart below, the United States of America is the largest contributor of humanitarian aid to the world’s poor and destitute. Yes, while we Americans are merely 4.45% of the world’s population, our U.S. government ranks number one in giving. And, yes, Pope Francis, we are a capitalist society.

Socialism shall forever remain an economic theory because it cannot be proven a means to raise standards of living. Capitalism, on the other hand, is the economic system by which the world’s nations build capital to fund essential services, national defenses and feed their hungry populations.

churchill on socialism

The above-charted humanitarian contributions do not reflect charitable contributions from American churches and NGO’s that alleviate suffering through medical missions, donations for life-preserving water wells, mentoring of third-world entrepreneurs and other services.

Pope Francis is confused. He confuses crony capitalism of Argentina with largely transparent capitalism practiced in the United States of America. In part, the successes of the capitalists in our country must be attributed to ethics ingrained in our society through Christian and Jewish Biblical teachings. Secondarily, we can attribute openness to government oversight and regulations, the latter both a help and a hindrance.

Adding to the Pope’s confusion is his choice of advisers. Radical leftists have his ear. His “climate expert” is an avoid atheist.

Regarding his confusion on economics, he calls for capitalists to invest in Cuba while condemning the very means by which such contributions are possible.

Do I recommend Catholics abandon their church? No, au contraire. I urge American Catholics to pray earnestly for God to reveal the truth of economics to Pope Francis. He desperately needs an epiphany of truth.

What’s in a word? Words Have Meanings

19 September 2015 ADwurd-werd-word
6 Tishrei 5776

A favorite pastime for me is to study languages. Spanish is my second language, the one I study, read, write and recite most. I dabble in French, but my wife says my French sounds like a Mexican trying to speak French. So, it is I restrict my use of French to reading and sometimes writing. Pouvez-vous raconter, amigo? (language humor)

Lingua franca sounds like it means “the French language”, but the meaning of this phrase relates more to Greek and Arabic. Lingua franca was the Mediterranean language of commerce. In today’s global economy, the lingua franca is American English (my opinion).

An evangelist I know, David Shibley, speaking for the first time at an American church asks three questions:

  1. “What do you call someone who speaks three languages?” (typical response: trilingual)
  2. “What do you call someone who speaks two languages?” (typical response: bilingual)
  3. “What do you call someone who speaks only ONE language?” (typical response: silence) To this third question, David will say “American!”.

Good, bad or indifferent, our American language, by extension our American culture, influences every nation on the face of the earth. A veritable cornucopia (unfortunately also a pornucopia) of movies translate into hundreds of languages thereby introducing our culture or perceived culture to every tribe, every nation, every culture. I say this to reassure you proper use of American English can get you around anywhere you go, but forgo slang and our unique idiomatic expressions like “kicking the bucket”.

Perplexing as it is, here in the USA, we all speak American English, the most verbose of all languages, but few Americans can speak a second language. Elsewhere, over half, approximately 53% of educated people in the rest of the world speak their respective native languages and American English as a second language.

Back to Spanish

If you ask a grocer for avocado anywhere in these United States, the grocer knows precisely what you want. Not so in Latin America and Spain. In Cuba and Mexico, avocado translates aguacate. However in other places like Peru, avocado translates palta. While in Spain you order panocha, the waitress brings to you corn-on-the-cob. Use that word in most of Latin America and she’ll angrily have you thrown out of the restaurant.

Pass the Bacán

To my fellow Americans, this word appears to be a homonym of bacon. It’s not. Pronounce it bahcahn, accent on the second syllable. If you have a rudimentary Spanish-language skill, it’s good to prepare your vocabulary BEFORE you travel. As with avocado and panocha, use of the word bacán warrants knowing the appropriate colloquial application.

  • In Peru, bacán means excellent, fantastic, great, cool, but step over into Chile where it may mean one thing (fantastic) or another (arrogant, overbearing).
  • In either Cuba or Columbia, the word means beautiful, gorgeous.

What is Christian to you?

So you see, words have meanings, depending on geographical location, culture or an event in the past. Take the word Christian, for example. If one could travel back in time to the first century AD, this word Christian meant “Christ-like ones”. All those disciples of Rabbi Yeshua (Jesus) were Jewish Christians. For a Jew to become a Christian meant the loss of friendships and family, and often persecution and death. For a Jew to become a follower of Rabbi Yeshua (Jesus Christ) was a life-changing experience.

In the year of our Lord 2015, Christian most often means, “my parents are Christians“, membership in a denomination, or some political affiliation.

While visiting home groups in Cuba, I will ask la dueña or el dueño (owner) of the house, “Which of these persons are believers in Jesus Christ?” She or he will point to each in turn, saying, “Él, si. Ella, no.” (He is, she isn’t.) Cubans don’t think in terms of religious denominations; they think in terms of wholly believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, his virgin birth, crucifixion, and resurrection. I found this to be true of mainland Chinese believers, also.

The question of the hour is this: what is Christian to you? I grew up in the small coastal Texas city of Palacios. There were churches on all four corners of my block: Presbyterian, Methodist, Assembly of God and Nazarene. At the infrequent invitation of classmates or neighborhood friends, I would go to a church for a Sunday visit. My mother-in-law to be insisted I attend her Baptist church if I wished to be with my wife-to-be on Sundays. Not once did visiting a church affect me. Eight years after meeting my bride-to-be (five years of marriage) an Air Force sergeant came to my door with a fellow Air Force companion. In short, when this angry young man heard Sgt. Chuck Speare say, “John, you need Jesus!”, my life began immediately to change. For me, becoming Christian didn’t happen on the spot, but I began to explore churches and the Bible. About a year later, August 1969, while reading my wife’s red-letter Bible, I experienced this epiphany. All alone. No altar call. No evangelist nearby. I surrendered to the lordship of Jesus Christ.

Around the world of Islamic populations, this ‘epiphany’ experience plays out millions of times a year as the Lord Jesus Christ appears to Muslims in dreams and visions. Muslim background believers (MBB) hold a distinct definition of what it is to become a Christian, just as it was for first-century Jewish converts.

What about you? What’s your situation? God saves us by grace. Grace is a gift. It is the power and the desire to do God’s will. Do you yield to or resist the grace of God?
