Practical Atheism – The great divide in American society today

The great divide in American society today is along the lines of spiritual and factual the-trouble-with-our-liberal-friends-is-not-that-theyre-ignorant-its-just-that-they-know-so-much-that-isnt-soignorance. What is the definition of ignorant?

Ignorant:lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact

This great divide can more precisely be described as atheism which is, quite simply, idolatry: “excessive or blind adoration, reverence, devotion, etc.” We commonly recognize the line of division as conservatives vs. liberals (aka progressives).

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin said, “We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.” Franklin’s wisdom is congruous with Reagan’s in this regard.

“Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.” – The Apostle Paul, 1 Corinthians 12:1-2 NLT

Another translation says, “I do not want you to be ignorant”.

Sadly, idolatry and ignorance are on public display in liberal churches that accept as normal same-sex marriages and a ‘woman’s right to choose’, a euphemism  infanticide.

Liberals – progressives – are practical atheists. All idolaters are practical atheists. This is to say they are atheists by practice.

An exceptional resource to understand the psychology of willful ignorance is a book by willful-blindnessMargaret Heffernan titled WILLFUL BLINDNESS – Why We Ignore the Obvious at Our Peril. Available from

Author Margaret Heffernan examines the intricate, pervasive cognitive and emotional mechanisms by which we choose, sometimes consciously but mostly not, to remain unseeing in situations where “we could know, and should know, but don’t know because it makes us feel better not to know.” We do that, Heffernan argues and illustrates through a multitude of case studies ranging from dictatorships to disastrous love affairs to Bernie Madoff, because “the more tightly we focus, the more we leave out” — or, as cognitive scientist Alexandra Horowitz put it in her remarkable exploration of exactly what we leave out in our daily lives, because “attention is an intentional, unapologetic discriminator.” [Brain Pickings – Why we ignore the obvious: The psychology of willful blindness]

At no point in history were all our forefathers in perfect agreement with the tenets of Holy Scripture. In fact, the only perfectly holy human to ever walk this earth was the Son of God, Jesus Christ. However, up until the progressives took control of public education, the vast majority of Americans had knowledge of God and/or respect for Him.

Why would God allow liberal churches to coexist with Bible-believing churches? He allows the conservative-vs-liberal tension to coexist in so we can know the true character of the Living God, our Creator. He intentionally allows us to choose between right and wrong, between knowledge and ignorance.

My people are being destroyed
    because they don’t know me.
Since you priests refuse to know me,
I refuse to recognize you as my priests.
Since you have forgotten the laws of your God,
I will forget to bless your children.

Hosea 4:6 NLT

The foe presenting the greatest threat to America today is not the military forces of Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran. Ignorance of the sovereign will and character of God is our greatest enemy.
