The four cities with the most stringent gun-control laws – Washington D.C., Chicago, New Orleans, and Detroit – also have the most murders by firearms.
Overall, the U.S.A. ranks third from the top in murders. However, when discounting murders committed in the four cities named above, the U.S.A. ranks third from the bottom. In all the world.
Why all the murders?
The Sixth of the Ten Commandments prohibits murder. However, incidents of murder over thousands of years are recorded in the Bible. In one day, Abimelek son of Jerub-Baal murdered in premeditated, cold blood 70 of his brothers.
What is the cause of murder?
Jesus Christ makes very clear the motivation to murder. He says it’s not what you consume – not drugs, alcohol, or food – that causes one person to murder others.
Jesus says, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.” [Mark 7:20-23 NLT]
What do we now know about Devin Patrick Kelley who slaughtered 26 persons and wounded as many more inside a San Antonio-area church?
According to a The Daily Beast news story, Kelley enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2009 after graduating from high school. “Kelley was discharged from the Air Force in 2014, according to Defense Department records. Kelley was court-martialed in November 2012 for assaulting his wife and their child. A judge sentenced him with a bad-conduct discharge, 12 months confinement, and two reductions in rank to basic airman, according to an appeals court decision in 2013 that affirmed the decision against Kelley.” [link to story http://thebea.st/2AbV41l ]
Can we outlaw evil hearts? Well, God did that thousands of years ago when he inscribed those Ten Commandments and almost 2,000 years ago the Lord Jesus spoke to the issue of murder in 1 John 3:15: “Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.”
What’s the cure? Can prohibiting all manner of weapons, including guns, knives, cars, and clubs, prevent murders?
The Apostle Paul, a foremost authority on God’s mindset, was a hateful persecutor of Christians who could have easily become a Devin Patrick Kelley, but he didn’t because he surrendered to the grace of God.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:16-17, “So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now! This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
There is hope for everyone, even murderers. As per Romans 10:13, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
The solution to ending murders is not gun control but heart control.
