Macbeth’s cynical response is familiar to fans of Shakespeare.
“Out, out, brief candle. Life is nothing more than an illusion. It’s like a poor actor who struts and worries for his hour on the stage and then is never heard from again. Life is a story told by an idiot, full of noise and emotional disturbance but devoid of meaning.”
Are the deaths of children truly devoid of meaning? One of my adult children passed away last Spring. What of those children – babies slaughtered by a hate-filled madman in the Sutherland Springs Baptist Church? Were their lives of little or no value?
Heart-wrenching abortion statistics and the testimony of a woman who underwent the abortion of her first child stirred the hearts of participants in the Texas Right to Life banquet yesterday evening in Dallas. Tens of thousands of Texas children face premature death-by-abortionists each year. Are, were, the lives of the victims of abortion meaningless?
In a podcast titled EVERY LIFE IS LONG ENOUGH (16/11/2017), Max Lucado dispels Macbeth’s cynical worldview.
“We speak of a short life, but compared to eternity, who has a long one? A person’s days on earth may seem like a thimbleful. But compared to the Pacific of eternity, even the years of Methuselah filled no more than a glass.
James was not speaking just to the young when he said, “Your life is like a mist. You can see it for a short time, but then it goes away” (James 4:14). In God’s plan every life is long enough and every death is timely. And though you and I might wish for a longer life, God knows better.
And this is important. Though you and I may wish a longer life for our loved ones who’ve gone to glory before us, they don’t. Ironically, the first to accept God’s decision of death is the one who dies. While we’re mourning at a grave, they’re marveling at heaven. While we’re questioning God, they’re praising God!”
King David’s mourning-to-joy transformation on learning about the death of his seven-day-old newborn child serves to validate Max Lucado on this subject of premature death. Read the full story in 2 Samuel chapter 12.
Do you think me dismissive of premature death? Rest assured, this is not the case. My desire is to more fully understand God’s Big Idea. Understanding the majestic mind of God, the creator of the universe is beyond the grasp of the human mind. For now.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT
All human life is precious to God, from the moment of conception to the last beat of the heart.
Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Have faith in God.
