Always – not sometimes – always the flight attendant instructs us to put on our oxygen mask before assisting others. Why? Airline professionals know your failure to do so will actually imperil your children or nearby passengers who require assistance.
In 2018, the US gave about $20 billion in foreign aid to other countries around the world.
Of the three most generous nations as a percentage of GDP – America, Canada, and New Zeland – Americans led the way in 2016. “Charitable giving by individuals as a percentage of GDP in America was recorded at 1.44%, in New Zealand at 0.79%, in Canada at .77%…” https://ind.pn/2l5f7ZT
From The Independent | “America has been named as the world’s most generous nation in the world, where its citizens give the most to charity, according to a new report.” https://ind.pn/2l5f7ZT
Imagine the scale of relief and medical care given to poor countries by Samaritan’s Purse, The Salvation Army, American churches, Gospel For Muslims Ministry, Christ for India, and American philanthropists who treat the sick, provide potable water to the thirsty, microloans to budding entrepreneurs, teach business principles to small business owners, and provide free education to children.
And all the charity goes without strings attached. I know. My wife and I have participated in missions to poor countries and donated funds to support charitable activities abroad.
What if we Americans took care of matters abroad while neglecting the needs of our own children and fellow citizens? Is the answer not obvious?
This brings me to my point: We must place America first. If we don’t put on our ‘oxygen mask’ first, how will we be able to assist needy people beyond our borders?
President Trump calls for federal government to put America first. Is this a good idea? Is this a Biblical worldview? WWJD?
Proverbs 19:8 NLT | “To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.”
Ephesians 5:28 NLT | “In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself.”
Matthew 22:37-40 NLT | Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
How about one more?
Matthew 7:1-5 NLT | “…First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”
As an individual and as a nation, we must get ourselves into a condition whereby we can assist other persons, other nations.
For American citizens and the American government to put America First is wisdom and scripturally supported.
