Bible: Pray For Leaders – Why?

1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NLT) says, “I urge you, first of all, to pray for …. kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.”

Why should we pray for those in authority? Find the answer in the two following questions.

  • Who suffers when authorities make bad decisions?
  • Who experiences the consequences of poor judgment on the part of authorities?

2 Chronicles 7:14 reveals how poor decisions and misguided actions on the part of governmental officials affects the population as a whole, not just the decision makers.

“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

The general population living under misguided authorities suffer the consequences.

Hierarchy of Authority – Republican Form of Government

We the people choose our government authorities. The authority to whom we report is God, himself. Therefore, we the people reap the consequences of bad behavior of governing authorities.

How should we pray for authorities?

Humility – All too many elected officials develop a type of god complex, assuming all knowledge of what is best for the general population. Pray that governing authorities will be humble before God. 1 Kings 8:30

Wisdom – Never assume your elected officials are inherently more wise than the collective wisdom of the general population. Deuteronomy 1:13

Grace – Pray that God’s grace, the power and the desire to do God’s will, will operate in their lives. Philippians 2:13

Mercy – Beseech God to be merciful when – not if – governing authorities err. 2 Samuel 24:14

Correction – Ask God to restore them when they shift from a posture of public servant to the role of benevolent dictator. Hebrews 12:11

At this time, there is inordinate, disproportionate fear that has overtaken this nation and the world. Allen West writes in CNS News this week of March 23, 2020 | Wuhan Coronavirus Gives Rise to Hypocrisy
