As I write, this is Mothers Day 2020. Reading through the Bible in the New Living Translation (NLT) early this Sunday morning, a phrase in John 1:51 captured my attention, “…the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth“.
What meaning did Robert Plant, the author of that famous song, wish to impart? In an interview, Plant was asked the meaning of the phrase. Plant said, “I struggle with some of the lyrics from particular periods of time. The musicality and the construction of it is peerless. Maybe I’m still trying to work out what I was talking about.” The author of the lyrics did not know the meaning of a phrase he penned, one of he most popular songs in the history of modern music.
And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll And she's buying a stairway to Heaven Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin Song on YouTube.com
Meanwhile, Jacob left Beersheba and traveled toward Haran. At sundown he arrived at a good place to set up camp and stopped there for the night. Jacob found a stone to rest his head against and lay down to sleep. As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway. Genesis 28:10-12 NLT
In the dream, Jacob had an encounter with the Lord whom he saw standing at the top of the stairway.
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23 NLT
Who is the Lord? Unmistakably, Jesus is Lord. In a few words, why did Jesus appear on earth?
But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8 NLT
The verb destroy (Greek, Strong’s 3089) means undo, dissolve. This compares to one of the qualities of Daniel: dissolving of doubts (Daniel 5:12 KJV) and means unravel (Hebrew, Strong’s 8271), as in undoing a knot. This phrase – undoing a knot – has the connotation of making something new.
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
The word new means, of recent creation, fresh or unused, other than the former or the old. A used car may look like a new car, but the new car has distinct characteristics that reveal it has never been used, refurbished, or cleaned up to look new.
To be a new creature in Christ is to be reborn, as though the former life never happened.
Jesus teaches that he is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can ascend to the Heavenly Father except through Him (John 14:6, NLT). Jesus is truly the only stairway to Heaven. You cannot buy your way to Heaven because Jesus has already paid the cost.
